Education Projects

Realising that education is a powerful tool to empower individuals and communities, we envision ‘Education for All’ as the best strategy for community development and poverty reduction. The SNS Foundation has thus launched a number of education programs to integrate non –school going children in to mainstream education. Apart from running bridge schools and centres, SNSF is also developing resources and building capacity and working with corporates to sponsor education of bright students.

Crèche Programme for Migrant Population at Nashik, Maharashtra

The crèche programme is operational among the migrant population in ten slum areas of Nasik, Maharashtra. Each crèche covers 25 children, between the ages of 1 to 4 years. The Foundation's Nasik branch has ensured that the crèche facilities are made available to children belonging to very poor families. Through these crèches, the Foundation is reaching out to 250 children each year. The major services provided in these centres include education, health check-ups and daily nutrition to children.

Pre-Nursery & Nursery Centres at Parwanoo, Himachal Pradesh and Nashik, Maharashtra

The Foundation's, Nashik branch has been running pre nursery and nursery centres for the neighbourhood children. The 30 students attending these classes belong to middle income group families. As this is an income generating initiative, a fee of Rs. 250/- per child per month is charged from the students. The funds generated through this initiative helps the Nasik, branch to sustain other community development activities. Another program is being implemented by Parwanoo branch, Himachal Pradesh. This year 45 children (age group 3 to 5 years) from all slums of Parwanoo were given education through the play way method as well as midday meals and heath check ups.

Project QUEST in partnership with AGILENT Technologies

QUEST is an acronym for Quality Science Education & Teachers’ Training, a four year old project. A partnership between Agilent Technologies and the SNS Foundation, it was launched in 2006 at Gurgaon and Bangalore.

Education Resource Development Centre at Gurgaon, Haryana

The SNS Foundation initiated the setting up of an 'Education Resource Development Centre’ at Gurgaon. The objective was to strengthen our Educational program specially the ongoing “Education for All” Program. The major activities undertaken by this centre include capacity building of teachers on teaching methodologies, developing user friendly teaching aids and counselling skills, training for coordinators, special need based workshops for children, developing a resource bank on innovative Teaching Learning Materials (TLM), collation of reference books, tools and materials for co-scholastic activities and organizing exposure visit to other agencies. Twenty teachers were trained in multi-grade teaching, developing of cost effective TLM and lesson plan.

Comprehensive Project on Health and Education in the Government Senior Secondary School, Sarhaul in partnership with the ’GE Volunteer Foundation’

In partnership with the 'GE Volunteer Foundation', SNS Foundation is implementing a comprehensive project on education, health, life skill education and environment education. The Foundation proposes to reach out to 1000 students through this initiative. The students have participated in activities such as developing a clean and green school environment by planting trees and cleanliness drives.

Philips Bright Life Studentship – social initiative by Philips India Lighting Division

The 'Philips 6875 Bright life Studentship' is a social initiative of Philips India Lighting division. This program was launched in December 2003. Like in the previous years, this year as well 206 students from 15 Educational Institutes at 4 locations (Gurgaon, Chennai, Pune and Kolkata) were selected to receive the studentship financial award. All the children who received this award were from government or government aided schools, having family income, of not more than 2000/- per month.

English Language Training Programme

Need was expressed by various stakeholders of the SNS Foundation to develop both spoken and written English skills of various project staff. In collaboration with 'Youth Reach & Learning Ing.,' the Foundation launched a project to develop and implement a curriculum mainly for 3 groups of participants- Teachers associated with Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Centres, Project staff and the youth associated with the Foundation. Through this project the Foundation reached out to 9 teachers, 3 youth trainer, 4 youth and 4 coordinators in building their English skills. This led to increase in their confidence building and better negotiating skills. Based on the Foundation's experience and success of this pilot initiative, it was agreed to integrate this project as part of Youth Reach and learning Inc. training module.

National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)

The primary aim of the NIOS, launched in 2001, is to provide recognition, to education being given to children in non-formal institutions and to facilitate their admission in formal schools. An annual exam was held this year under the aegis of NIOS (Open Basic Education system). A record 170 students appeared for examinations of Std. III, V and VIII. The overall pass percentage was as high as 76%. One of the greatest achievements of SNSF was the admission of 1000 such students to regular schools, both in the private and government schools.

Education for All

SNS Foundation continued to focus on preparing non-school going children from the most marginalized sections of society, for formal schooling. This is being done through various learning centres developed by the Foundation. These centres serve as bridge schools by bringing children to an educational level before they are enrolled in regular Government and private schools. These bridge schools also help children to come at par with other children in regular schools. Continuous efforts are made to enhance their self esteem and help these children overcome any stigma that may affect their performance while in regular school.

TEAM Project for Education

Project TEAM (Town Enrichment Action Movement) was started in 1996 with the main objective of enrolling non-school going children into an educational institute to make Gurgaon a “Zero Tolerance Zone for Child Labour”.
