SNS Foundation’s Participation at World Disability Day Celebrations at India Gate, New Delhi, December 03, 2017

Students with speech and hearing impairment undergoing training in ‘Packaging & Inspection’ at SNS Foundation, Gurugram presented the Indian national anthem in sign language as part of the celebrations for World Disability Day at India Gate, New Delhi. This World Disability Day held special significance in India as it marked the first anniversary of The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 which recognizes 21 disabilities.

The day’s event was packed with cultural performances by persons with disabilities, showcasing an indomitable spirit and extraordinary talent. Some of the day’s notable performances were an Odissi dance duet performance by Mithilesh Patnaik, who has Down Syndrome and Sakti Swarupa, who is speech and hearing impaired; dance performance by Vinod Thakur of Nach Baliye Season 6 and India’s Got Talent Season 2 fame. Incidentally, Vinod is born without any legs. Another celebrity performance was of Diwakar Sharma of Sa Re Ga Ma Little Champs fame, who presented popular Bollywood tunes. Diwakar is visually impaired. The event was jointly organized by American India Foundation (AIF) and National Council for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP), sponsored by ONGC. Following cultural performances all participants joined the Walk to Freedom from Amar Jyoti to National Stadium.
